About Outlook

It is estimated by the year 2010, 1 in every 250 young adults will be a survivor of childhood cancer (Keene, Hobbie & Ruccione, 2000). Survivors, and their families, continue to confront issues that are related to their experience long after the medical treatment has ended. In order to provide a resource for the growing population of survivors and their families, we have developed a web site called Outlook. Outlook is an interactive web based information system designed to address the needs of survivors of childhood cancer and their families.

Who is Outlook for?

The focus of Outlook is to address the needs of survivors of childhood cancer and their families. By providing information we hope to give survivors and their families the tools to help them become their own advocate. Aspects of Outlook, however, can be valuable to almost anyone. Within the personal stories section one can witness strength, resiliency and love for life. Patients who are currently undergoing treatment can also find support in Outlook by seeing the faces of survivors who represent the light at the end of the tunnel.

What information can I find in Outlook?

Insurance and Financial Information
The information in this section is designed to help you better educate yourself about insurance and financial issues. The section provides you with information on how to learn more about your particular situation. You will find suggestions through other survivors experiences, and learn about what you can do to help change current health care policies.

Health Issues and Concerns
This section addresses your need, as a survivor of cancer, to continue to care for and be aware of your body. The information is geared towards helping you to learn more about what you need to do to care for your physical and emotional health.

School and Job Issues
This section provides information on how to deal with long-term effects from the disease and/ or treatment when it affects you in a school or job setting.

Personal Stories
This is a special section that includes stories, thoughts, poems and advice from survivors and their families. Audio clips from survivors and their families are integrated throughout the website. Photographs of survivors and their families are also placed throughout the many sections of the web site.

Personal Homepages
In the personal homepage section, survivors are able to express their own thoughts and interests by designing and adding content to their personal homepage. Survivors and their families can also browse or search through other survivor's homepages.

Survey
Please take a moment to fill out this survey. We would like to learn more about you so that we can better address your interests and needs. We would like your feedback on how helpful you find the current content of Outlook and how we can make Outlook more beneficial for you. Your suggestions would be most helpful for the further development of this web site.
